Meaning and traditions
Independence Day commemorates the June 12, 1898 declaration of Philippine independence in Kawit, Cavite. It's one of the most important civic holidays we mark each year — flags out, programs in plazas, and the usual reminders of what our sovereignty actually cost.
Expect flag-raising ceremonies, official programs, and history features across media. Since the date never moves, it's easy to check ahead whether June 12 forms a natural long weekend worth claiming — for a trip, a family thing, or just a quiet rest day.
A bit of history
On June 12, 1898, General Emilio Aguinaldo waved the first Philippine flag from the window of his house in Kawit, Cavite, while the Marcha Nacional Filipina played for the first time in public. The Act of the Declaration of Independence, written by Ambrosio Rianzares Bautista, was read out loud to a crowd of around 100 people — the official birth certificate of the First Philippine Republic.
For nearly fifty years after, we celebrated independence on July 4, the anniversary of the 1946 U.S. recognition of Philippine sovereignty. President Diosdado Macapagal moved the date back to June 12 in 1962 to anchor the holiday to our own declaration, not somebody else's calendar. The change was made permanent by Republic Act No. 4166 in 1964.

Holiday pay: worked example
Independence Day is a regular holiday. If your daily rate is ₱700, here's how the math lands for the most common scenarios under DOLE's Handbook on Workers' Statutory Monetary Benefits.
| Scenario | Pay |
|---|---|
| If you don't work (covered employee) | ₱700 (100% of daily rate, paid) |
| If you work 8 hours | ₱1,400 (200% of daily rate) |
| If you work 8 hours and it's your rest day | ₱1,820 (200% + 30% of 200%) |
| Overtime on the holiday (per hour beyond 8) | ₱227.50/hr (hourly rate × 200% × 130%) |
| Overtime on a holiday that's also a rest day | ₱295.75/hr (hourly rate × 200% × 130% × 130%) |
- The ₱700 figure is a worked example, not a legal minimum. Plug in your actual daily rate to see your number.
- Daily-paid workers must have been present (or on paid leave) on the workday before the holiday to claim the no-work pay.
- Kasambahay, contractuals, and project-based workers are covered too. Probationary status doesn't change the rule.
Long-weekend note

No extra leave day is needed for this break.
